What is MCS?
The Micro-Generation Certification Scheme (MCS) is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme, supported in the UK by the Government Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) - the scheme certifies and endorses the micro-generation approved technology used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources.
The MCS scheme is a key requirement for the Government’s finance schemes and incentives – in order to access the Feed-inTariff (FiTs), Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), or the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP), both the MCS product and installer must be MCS certified.
The MCS scheme is a key requirement for the Government's financial incentives to include the Feed-in Tariff and Renewable Heat Incentive.
For Green Deal advisors or providers who wish to obtain information for installing micro-generation products please click-on the Green Deal pages of our website - for individuals or companies who wish to become MCS certified, read on;
MCS standards are endorsed by representatives from both the product and installer, consumer groups, trade associations and technical experts from across the micro-generation and renewable industry. Technical working groups regularly update the MCS standards and documents, which coincide with approved international and European standards.
The Certification Bodies have been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), to regularly assess products and installers to the MCS scheme. Once MCS certificated, your Certification Body will be your main point of contact for any technical or industry queries.
About the Micro-Generation Certification Scheme (MCS) - an industry-led and internationally recognised quality assurance scheme, supported by the DECC – MCS was launched in 2008 and is an EN 45011 scheme, which certifies micro-generation products used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources.
MCS covers electricity generating technology to a capacity of up to 50kW and heat generating technology to a capacity of up to 45kW. Currently, MCS covers the following technologies:
- Biomass
- Micro Hydro Turbines
- Heat Pumps (Air Source and Ground Source)
- Micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Systems
- Pitched Roof Mounting Systems
- Solar Photovoltaic
- Solar Thermal
- Wind Turbines
